How to get an ESL Job Offer
When we last spoke I had 3 different job offers. Well lets just say that they have all come and gone and have changed! First let’s talk about how to get an ESL Job Offer.
Both positions in Turkey were with organizations that could not answer very basic questions about living, references, etc. Since they could not answer my questions, we thought they were not reputable companies to work for. The third job that I interviewed for in China allowed me to be recommended by a certain recruiting agency. I have not had any job interviews as of today from being recommended by this recruiting agency. They are a very reputable recruiting agency, nevertheless I believe the process is quite a bit longer working through them.
I don’t know why I was so surprised that the job offer world in applying for an ESL Teaching job would be so different than applying for a position locally. It should be different, it is different and for good reason. You have to be prepared for it!! There are many things that come into play.
1. Time difference
2. Language barrier
3. Language definition barrier
4. Deciding on the city to live
5. Deciding if the culture in that location is what you are looking for
6. Understanding the contract
7. MAKING THE DECISION TO MOVE!!!
There are so many things that make the interviewing/accepting a job process a lot longer than I expected. I have found many different tricks along to way to help the application process go faster. Put your resume on www.eslcafe.com/jobs/wanted/#PostMessage for FREE! If you put your resume or job that you are interested you will be flooded with recruiters, schools, and universities. This has been the best way I have found to let those out there know that you are interested in teaching in their country. I have received probably 25 e-mails through doing this. The best part about some of these e-mails is that it is the universities/schools contacting me directly hence making the process faster.
So you should also send your resume (cv), passport, and degree in your initial e-mail. This shows that you are organized, and prepared. They are going to request them anyways in the following e-mail so you might as well send it from the start. Then you have to have a Skype account and make sure you have a webcam either on your computer or one you can attach. Many interviews are actually video interviews…so make sure you are ready for that. I woke up 20 minutes before my interview realizing it was a video interview!!!! Let’s just say I applied makeup very fast and brushed my teeth in record time! Most countries are NOT equal opportunity employers…so they do have a look that they are going for and they can hire you based off of what you look like. I figure if they want a blonde, 5’7″ 21 yr old…probably better they find out from the beginning that is NOT me. You most likely don’t want to work at a place like that anyway. They are obviously not interested in your “teaching ability”.
Organization is key when applying overseas. Make sure you are keeping track of who you are sending your resume to and who has responded. I have been color coding my e-mails so I can see which country they are from and what process that job application is in. I have also created a folder for jobs that I have denied or not been accepted to. This is so I can reference any e-mail or contact that I have had along the way.
